OUR FAMOUS AMERICAN LEGION POST 38
BRAT FRY
Now through October 28, 2026
Every Wednesday from 11:00 - 2:00pm

Our Post 38 Brat Fry is in full swing and we are lovin' all the guests who are coming out to support us.

You asked and we listened, and we have expanded our menu. Why go to that drive-thru place and get a lackluster burger when you can get a fresh, cooked brat, hot dog or hamburger with all your favorite toppings (catsup, mustard, relish, onion, pickles, and sauerkraut).

This year we are featuring the American Legion Special. This is a collision of meat happiness. A juicy hamburger, topped with a brat patty. You can have this with or without cheese.

So, stop by Post 38 on Wednesdays and get your grub on. Here, the food is hot and the drinks are strong and cold!

FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2026
STARTING AT 7:30PM
On Friday, May 8, 2026, the Fox Valley Concert Band will be performing a FREE Spring Concert. Please see below for concert particulars.
This concert is of significance as it is being held on VE Day. For those who may not know what VE Day is, it is short for Victory in Europe Day. This day is a deeply significant annual observance marking the end of World War II in Europe. May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany had finally surrendered, ending the war.
The Concert Band also has members from our very own American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38 - Appleton WI and they are extending an invite to veterans, family, and friends of veterans to attend.
The music performed was either written during the war or in honor of those who served. Please consider attending this event.

MISSIONS OF HONOR

Flights for Veterans of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT)

Missions of Honor is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring U.S. veterans through meaningful trips and experiences that foster reflection, connection, and gratitude.  There are two Missions currently available. See the poster below!

As many of you know who follow our media pages, the Appleton American Legion Post 38 has been a large supporter of the Old Glory Honor Flight for a few year now. We started off small and have expanded our support to the Brat Fry Extravaganza that occurs every August.

Old Glory Honor Flight was founded in 2009 in Appleton, Wisconsin, by a dedicated group of local volunteers who shared a deep passion for honoring veterans. Their goal was simple yet profound: to open an Honor Flight hub serving Northeast Wisconsin and give World War II veterans the opportunity to visit the memorials built in their honor.

In 2023, many of those same community leaders founded Missions of Honor—again based in Appleton—with the goal of expanding their reach to a new generation of veterans. Born out of a growing awareness of the mental health challenges faced by America’s heroes, they  recognized the need to create experiences  fostering reflection, connection, and healing. Through programs like the Freedom to Liberty: A Mission of Healing Retreat, they began offering opportunities for veterans to find peace, reconnect with their battle buddies, and take the next step on their journey toward healing.

Later that year, their first Freedom to Liberty Retreat brought veterans of the Global War on Terrorism to New York City for three nights of reflection and renewal. Participants visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Statue of Liberty, and the Freedom Tower, while hearing directly from 9/11 first responders and distinguished veterans—including a Medal of Honor recipient—who shared their stories of hope, resilience, and faith.

Recognizing the shared mission, values, and community roots between Old Glory Honor Flight and Missions of Honor, they made the decision to merge the two organizations, with the merger set to be finalized in early 2026 – now Missions of Honor.

They have  served well over 8,000 veterans from Northeast Wisconsin and beyond—through missions to Washington, D.C.; Pearl Harbor; Normandy, France; Vietnam; New York City; and more. We’ve also hosted visits to the traveling Vietnam Wall, The Highground, and the Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial.

MARCH 2026
POST 38 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
2 MARCH 2026

On Monday, March 2, 2026, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38, President Leigh Splitt, presented the Appleton American Legion Post 38, Commanded by Jarrod Coulter with a 250-year anniversary flag. It was a gift in celebrating the Legion's 107th Birthday.

Additionally, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38 provided an outstanding meal as well as served birthday cake. It is a true tribute to mutual desire to serve our veterans and our community. Post 38 is extremely fortunate to have such an alliance.

The flag will be flown at all Legion events this coming year. Thank you American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38 for such a thoughtful gift and for providing a wonderful meal for our Legionnaires.

FEBRUARY 2026

On Monday, February 2, 2026, The Appleton American Legion Post 38 held its 4 Chaplains Ceremony. This event is a time-honored tradition in which we highlight the importance of Americanism.
Americanism is one of 4 Pillars (the 3 other pillars are Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security and Children & Youth) of the American Legion. As Legionnaires, we are charged with carrying on the traditions of such including the tradition of relaying the heroic acts of 4 chaplains of different faiths who came together in prayer with the understanding they were facing their own peril on February 3, 1943.
The U.S. Army Transport Dorchester was hit by a German U-boat torpedo as it was transporting troops in the North Atlantic to an American base in Greenland. The ship sank, killing 672 of the 902 officers and enlisted men, merchant seamen and civilian workers aboard. But for those who survived, they were left with the memory of the courage and leadership exhibited by four chaplains of different faiths, who, in sacrificing their lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood.
As soldiers rushed to lifeboats, Rev. George Fox (Methodist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed) and Father John Washington (Roman Catholic) comforted the wounded and directed others to safety. One survivor watched the chaplains distribute life jackets, and when they ran out, they removed theirs and gave them to four young men. As the Dorchester sank, the chaplains were seen linked arm in arm, praying.
We'd like to thank our own Chaplain Bob Johnson for reading the opening of the 4 Chaplains Ceremony and the following presenters:
*Joe Jackson lighting the candle for Rev. George L. Fox
*Paul Heit lighting the candle for Rev. Alexander D. Goode
*Chaplain American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38, Lori Bishop lighting the candle for Clark V. Poling
*District 9 SAL Cmdr Bob Siede, lighting the candle for Rev. John P. Washington.
We'd also like to thank our Scarlet Guard Color Guard, led by Eric Stadler, and Boy Scout Troop 9 (members Abe, Dillon, Calvin, Will Collin and Ethan) who along with Allan Watry (SAL) presented the POW/MIA. Their presence at this event made it all more meaningful.
