POST 38 BREAKFAST WITH SANTA EVENT
Thank you to all the wonderful people who braved the cold to have a delicious breakfast with Santa. We were so impressed with the turnout, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve each and every one of you, but mostly the little boys and girls in attendance.
I have it on good authority Santa was very impressed with all the well-behaved boys and girls, and it definitely made his nice list easy to review. He also loved his gifts from the kids, and he is so appreciative of the sweet gestures.
Also, a HUGE thank you and shout out to all the volunteers who helped in making this day very special. From the chefs who did the cooking, to the set-up/take-down crews; to those who helped the kids in making their special creations. You epitomize and embody what it means to be a member of the American Legion Post 38 Family. None of this is possible without all of you.

2025 POST EVERLASTING CEREMONY
Monday, October 6, 2025
On Monday, October 6, 2025, Appleton American Legion Post 38 had the honor of hosting families of Post 38 members who have gone to their eternal reward and dignitaries, including Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford, as we held our Post Everlasting Ceremony.
The Post Everlasting is a ceremonial event held by all American Legion Posts to honor the memory of deceased veterans. It involves a resolution to transfer the deceased to a Post Everlasting, symbolizing their eternal membership in the Legion.
Our ceremony began with the presentation of the colors by our own Scarlet Guard Color Guard headed by Eric Stadler, followed by our Ceremonial Honor Guard, led by William "Bill" Burton.
The ceremony included opening and closing prayers by our chaplain, Bob Johnson, the reading of deceased veterans of the past year by Ms. Lori Bishop of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38, and rifles in remembrance of the honored veterans. This event is meant to provide a sense of closure and comfort to families and fellow Legionnaires, recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans in defending their country. This year, we honor the following veterans:

2025 OLD GLORY HONOR FLIGHT PRESENTATION

On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the Appleton American Legion Post 38 had the honor of presenting Mrs. Diane MacDonald, Executive Director, Old Glory Honor Flight (OGHF) in Appleton, WI with a check to assist area veterans in visiting their national memorials in Washington, DC.
MacDonald has been with Old Glory Honor Flight since 2009 and serving as Executive Director for the past 5 years. She expressed during her Wednesday night talk with Post Member that it means “a lot” to have an organization like ours in their backyard. She is equally impressed how the partnership with Post 38 has evolved stating, “…there is no greater joy to see an organization grow” relating to how the Post’s initial donation was $10.00 in 2009.
That initial donation challenged Post 38 to do more. Answering the call to service supporting fellow veterans, our partnership with Old Glory Honor Flight over the years has expanded significantly in raising funds so veterans can take trips to their memorials. Appleton and surrounding communities have equally supported the Appleton American Legion Post 38 in accomplishing its goals, and this year’s Brat Fry Extravaganza on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, raised a phenomenal $16,000. This is Post 38’s largest donation to date. Post 38 was able to raise this amount through a combination of amazing partnerships with local businesses and other veterans organizations, and through generous donations from the community.
When asked what is included in a day trip to a veteran’s memorial, MacDonald stated, “the veteran’s flights, meals, tours, and souvenirs are paid for….everything is included…”; the care from a chaperone (these volunteers fund their own flights at $500) who is their “guardian” for the day. They do everything for the veteran, and sign-on to be a veteran’s “shadow” for the day. She said, “they are their eyes if they cannot see.” Medical volunteers are onboard flights as well, to ensure the safety of veterans and escort passengers.
Since its inception, Old Glory Honor Flight has flown over 7,000 veterans to see their memorials in Washington DC. In the past couple of years, the Old Glory Honor Flight has expanded its missions beyond the Beltway. Currently, not only is Old Glory Honor Flight sending veterans to Washington, DC, but also, to places such as Vietnam, Pearl Harbor, Normandy (2024), and now for the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) veterans, New York City. On September 2, 2025, Old Glory Honor Flight flew its 76th mission.
Recently, Old Glory Honor Flight in partnership with Missions of Honor, Inc., sent their third (3rd) group of GWOT veterans to their memorials in New York City. Soon, the two organizations will merge together forming an organization that encompasses both senior and young veterans. In case you have not heard of Missions of Honor prior to today, their organization exists to “focus on the health and well-being of veterans, particularly those who have served in recent conflicts.”
Ms. MacDonald informed Post 38 members during the membership meeting, with the $16,000 donation, it will allow thirty-two (32) veterans to fly free of charge to Washington, DC to see their memorials. In her closing remarks, MacDonald stated, “our community loves you and is very appreciative of your service.”
Appleton American Legion Post 38 is extremely grateful to its members for their hard work, contributing 446 person-hours of volunteer hours. Without our volunteers, this event would not exist. We appreciate the Appleton community and our partners for their staunch support, making this year's Post 38 event a tremendous success.

THANK YOU FOR OUR POST COMMANDER

On behalf of The Appleton American Legion Post 38, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to all the participants and attendees of Wednesday’s Brat Fry Extravaganza held on August 20, 2025.
The Appleton Community has long been a supporter of our veterans, but most graciously our Post 38/Club 38 Family, and on Wednesday, you assisted us in completing this year’s mission. As a result of the wonderful turnout, Post 38 was able to raise $16,000 to be donated to support the Old Glory Honor Flight (OGHF). This is a phenomenal achievement, and it could not have happened without the community’s support.
Funds raised during this event will be donated to the OGHF during a special check presentation. As many of you know, the OGHF assists our veterans in allowing them the opportunity to view their monuments and memorials in Washington, DC. This year’s donation enables us to send almost twice as many veterans as in previous years.
First, thank you to all volunteers the spent their day to support this year’s event. Special recognition goes to the following establishments and organizations:
*The Bar-Lynndale: Their entire crew allowed us to add another dimension to this year’s fundraiser by offering amazing, Wisconsin grown, corn-on-the-cob. When asked “why” the answer was simple, to support the veterans. As one person indicated, they have brothers who are currently serving, and it is the least that can be done.
*Duke FM and Mike (93.5 & 99.7) for spinning the tunes and bringing the Legends of Country Music to the Appleton American Legion Post 38. Mike is a former Army paratrooper who’s a proud Yooper (we won’t hold it against him) and we thank Mike for his service to our great nation and to this year’s event. We are honored to have you in attendance.
*The Fox Valley Humane Association for bringing Toofer, a beautiful fur-baby who’s ready for adoption. This gentle giant definitely won over the hearts of many attendees. Our Post 38 Family hopes he finds his forever home soon.
*Music 6s, for providing real-time music and entertainment. They did an outstanding job and allowed other veterans the opportunity to see how through music, lives can be changed.
*Outagamie County Veterans Service Office who came out to continue their support of veterans and enabling them to get the benefits they earned through their service.
**Steve Canto for the Wisconsin Vietnam Memorial Wall Display which graced the grounds of The American Legion Post 38. This fitting tribute really brought home the number of veterans from Wisconsin who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict.
**Jim Panzer who volunteered to play music 3-7 pm. He and his partner brought back many younger day memories by playing old-time, toe-tapping tunes.
Finally, as Post 38 Commander, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the American Legion Post 38 Family (including Auxiliary-Unit 38, Legion Riders, SAL and Scarlet Guard Color Guard); the Club 38 crew (Jill, Spencer, **Jackie), and all the other volunteers who donated their time. We came together, and like any successful operation, we executed this mission with flawless execution. I sincerely thank you for all the support you show our Appleton community veterans, and all you do daily for our Appleton community.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Appleton American Legion Post 38 hosted its annual Brat Fry Extravaganza in support of the Old Glory Honor Flight. This year's event topped all previous events in not only turn out, but in funds raised as well. This year, we are proud to announce we raised $16,000 for the Old Glory Honor Flight. This tremendous feat could not have been accomplished without the wonderful volunteers who spent long hours ensuring the success of this evolution and to the several prtners who volunteered their business/music in making our event successful. 2025 MEMORIAL CEREMONY HONORING
1st Lieutenant Philip T. Bixby, Jr.

Gold Star World War II Veteran
As Memorial Day approaches, there are so many stories of heroes who braved a war that was fought on two fronts against two formidable enemies. At times the odds of becoming victorious seemed almost insurmountable. To this day, there are many stories that have never been told and have too passed in the memories of those brave men and women who answered the call to serve this nation.
There is a reason why these patriotic souls are proverbially referred to as the "Greatest Generation." They answered the call of duty, standing up for the country for whom they fought, and did so, in the most challenging conditions. Many of these heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice and would be forever interned in foreign soil.
The Appleton American Legion Post 38 is honored to highlight one of those heroes. A soldier who left Appleton and made his mark across the Atlantic. To this day, his service is recognized by the nation of whom he is contributed with saving from attack by Germany. The soldier we honor is, First Lieutenant Phillip T. Bixby, 2nd Armored Division, United States Army.
First Lieutenant Bixby was born into a family of farmers who tended the fields once gracing the Appleton area along Prospect Avenue. After high school, Philip attended UW Madison, where he began his military career serving in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Bixby, while attending UW-Madison studied the Farm and Industry short course, graduating with the Class of 1939. In 1941, Bixby married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary (Pekarske) Bixby and they would go on to have two children together.
Philip left to serve his country during World War II (WWII). He became a tank commander and served as the First Lieutenant of the 67th Armored Regiment in the 2nd Armored Division of the Army. During his service, he traveled to North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and Germany.
In January 1945, after being wounded three times in Europe, Philip briefly returned home, as the Army had granted him a one-month leave. Philip used it to visit his wife and family, spending precious time with ‘Bicky’, his two-year-old son.
Upon his return to the front lines, in March 1945, Bixby was informed he and his fellow service members were going to capture Berlin, and the country needed all veterans to serve. As he had done so many times before leading the advance with his head out of the turret of his tank, Philip was tragically killed by an enemy sniper on April 14, 1945, near the Elbe River outside Magdenburg, Germany. He was only 29 years old. The 2nd Armored Division crossed the river; however, they were ordered back, allowing the Russians to take Berlin. A month later, the war was over.
It would be over two week later that Philip’s beloved Rosemary would receive the dreaded news that her husband was killed in the line of duty. Philip would never see the child Rosemary gave birth to, his second son, Ronald, born in November 1945.
Philips T Bixby Jr is buried or memorialized at Plot J Row 8 Grave 17, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. Since 1945, the Diederen family from Brunssum, has adopted Philip’s grave and they lovingly cared for and maintained it.
On May 24, 2025, 1st Lieutenant Bixby, along with a number of American WWII veterans will be honored and remembered during the annual Memorial Eve gala dinner, organized by the Netherlands American Institute of Limburg (NAIL). This is a well-known and renowned event in the Holland region.

Certificate of Appreciation Presentation
The Appleton American Legion Post 38 has many members and volunteers who make our organization not only good, but great.
In fact, the amount of volunteer hours far exceeds the amount of paid hours. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do - "Veterans Serving Veterans."
On Monday, March 3, 2025, Post 38 had the pleasure of recognizing one of those individuals who is always on call to help wherever needed. Post Commander, Jan Hoffman, presented Gary Wickert a Certificate of Appreciation for all of his hard work either helping with the bar, working in the kitchen, or doing repairs around the Post.

FEBRUARY 2025
Four Chaplains Ceremony
Lt. George L. Fox (Methodist), Lt. Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lt. Clark V. Poling (First Dutch Reformed Church) and Lt. John P. Washington (Catholic). What did four men of different faiths all have in common? They were all Chaplains assigned to the USAT Dorchester.
The 368-foot steamship which previously served as a luxury liner, the USAT Dorchester was operated by the War Shipping Administration. It’s mission: sail from Newfoundland to Greenland to transport 906 troops. The ship would have to navigate icy seas and pass through waters infested with German U-boats.
After midnight on Feb. 3, 1943, the Dorchester was torpedoed by a U-boat in the Labrador Sea off Greenland and went down in 20 minutes, according to official records.
The four men listed above are forever remembered as heroes, who in the face of certain death, gave up their lifesaving gear to save their fellow troops. Their memory is forever memorialized.
On Monday, February 3, 2025, the Appleton American Legion held its own memorial service honoring the faithful service and ultimate sacrifice of these four men of God. They were brave until the end, comforting those who were scared, who lost the will to live, and those who knew they had sailed their final voyage that fateful night.
It is a privilege for our Post 38 members and the Post 38 family to remember such bravery, honor such courage, and pay tribute true faithfulness.

MIDWINTER CONFERENCE

One may ask, what does the American Legion and Pillars Adult and Family Shelter have in common? The answer is simple – a mutual desire to help veterans and others in need [in the Appleton area] who may be struggling with housing insecurity; and to help an organization within our own community, bringing awareness to homelessness, especially during the winter months.
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, the American Legion held its Mid-Winter Conference in Appleton, WI at the Hilton Paper Valley Hotel and Convention Center. Almost 600 Legionnaires and Legion Family members attended the event. It was during the convention, the Legion Family, which include all Posts, Auxiliary members, Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and Legion Riders, came together collecting items for our local shelter which provides both individual and family shelter. This year, it was determined by the 9th District, Pillars would be the recipient of such a sizeable donation.
Pillars has long served the Appleton community including those veterans who may be experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. According to Pillar’s Development Manager, Emily Boettcher, [corresponding with Post Commander, Jan Hoffman], Pillars provided assistance to “56 veteran clients” for Fiscal Year 2024 (October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024).
Pillar’s vision is simple; “envision a creative, compassionate community that collaborates to find innovative, effective solutions so experiences of homelessness are rare and brief and everyone as a place to call home.”
Our donation included a variety of items, including a substantial sock donation (donated by Wigwam Socks) an item desperately needed, especially during the colder weather months. Appleton American Legion Post 38 personnel put together 15 laundry baskets which included bath towel sets and various personal items; some with a focus on women’s health and wellness. Numerous items were donated in accordance with requests from the various Pillar locations – 6 in total, throughout the Appleton area.
Once the items were collected, they were loaded into a truck and delivered to Pillars by Wisconsin 9th District’s 2nd Vice Commander, Migeal Babino; Kennen, Wisconsin’s Post 362 Commander, Rosanna Bogle, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Larry Bogle, and Appleton’s Post 38 Communications Director, Catherine Kutzleb to the Pillars location at 605 Hancock Street, Appleton. All items donated were graciously received by Pillar staff members Nikki, Lauren, Emily, and Rye (last names withheld for security reasons).
The Pillar’s staff on duty remarked this was one of the largest single donations they have received, noting the donation would greatly benefit numerous individuals across all their facilities. The smiles in the photos capture the joy of both giving and receiving, especially when donations are desperately needed.

2025 ORATORICAL WINNER
Congratulations to Appleton American Legion Post 38 2025 Oratorical Winner Ms. Jade Wood, a senior at Appleton North High School. Jade was the winner of both Appleton American Legion Post 38's Oratorical Contest as well as Outagamie County's Oratorical Winner. She will be competing at the 9th District's Oratorical event on February 8, 2025 at Little Chute High School at 10:00am. All area Legion members are highly encouraged to attend this event. Please ensure you are seated no later than 9:45am. Please follow the posted signs for location.

It says a lot about an organization when individuals have been members of such for 30, 40, 50 or more years.
It says it is a place where individuals feel as if they belong, and it provides a place of camaraderie. It is also a testament that one believes in the mission of the organization – in this case, the Appleton American Legion Post 38.
On Monday, November 4, 2024, Post 38 Commander, Jan Hoffman, had the pleasure of presenting members of the Appleton American Legion Post 38 with their longevity awards. Awards are given in 5-year increments to members who have continued service with Post 38.
We are so grateful for your service to our nation and now your continued service to our Post 38 family. Thank you all for supporting our mission of veterans helping veterans.

POST EVERLASTING EVENT
On Monday, October 7, 2024, Appleton American Legion Post 38 held its Post Everlasting ceremony for the period of 2023-2024. This solemn event highlights those members of both Post 38 and the Auxiliary who have departed this world for their final reward.
The ceremony included our Scarlet Guard Color Guard(Chairperson, Eric Stadler) presenting the colors, a presentation by Appleton American Post 38 Commander, Jan Hoffman; the reading of all the members who have passed since 2023 by Lori Bishop, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38 - Appleton WI Chaplain. The ceremony concluded with a three-volley salute and the playing of taps.
We thank all those family members who attended this event and made the evening exceptionally special.

9th District Fall Conference
On Saturday, October 5, 2024, representatives from Appleton American Legion Post 38 attended the Fall 9th District Conference. This event was held at Red Maple Country Club from 8-3:00. A lot of information was put out at this meeting with the focuing continuing this year on the Be The One Campaign. SEPTEMBER POST MEETING
old glory honor flight check presentation
Wednesday, September 4, 2024
On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the Appleton American Legion Post 38 had the distinct honor of presenting Ms. Diane MacDonald, Executive Director, Old Glory Honor Flight (OGHF) in Appleton, WI with a check for $7,500 to fly veterans to their national memorials in Washington, DC.
Diane has been with the Old Glory Honor Flight for over 15 years, and she recalled her first encounter with American Legion Post 38. MacDonald related how the partnership with Post 38 began with a small “$10.00 donation.” Diane recalled that donation during her visit to the Post, “…wasn’t what I expected, but OK, it’s a start.”
That initial donation set the wheels in motion for Post 38 to do more. Answering the call to service in supporting fellow veterans, our partnership with Old Glory Honor Flight over the years has expanded significantly in raising funds so veterans can take their trips to their memorials. The Appleton Community has equally supported Post 38 in accomplishing its goals, and this years’ Brat Fry Extravaganza on August 21, 2024, raised an impressive $7,500.
Since its inception, the Old Glory Honor Flight has flown 7,000 veterans to see their memorial in Washington DC. The first veterans flown out of the Fox Valley in 2009 were World War II veterans. Sadly, due to delays in constructing their memorial, many of these same veterans did not have the opportunity to see the memorials dedicated to their service. Additionally, the chaperones who accompanied these veterans were Vietnam veterans, and they wanted to ensure the WWII veterans saw their memorial before it was too late.
On June 6, 2024, Old Glory Honor Flight, working in conjunction with American Airlines, flew sixty-eight veterans to Normandy, for the D-Day remembrance event. As Diane stated, “the average age of these veterans was 100.”
Currently, OGHF is looking for Korean and Vietnam veterans to place them on the flight wait list. Any honorably discharged veteran, regardless of where they served (overseas or stateside), whose service is prior to May 7, 1975, can apply to be placed on the list for their flight. This year, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the Old Glory Honor Flight will fly Mission 70.
Ms. MacDonald informed Post 38 members during the membership meeting, with the $7,500 donation, it will allow fifteen veterans to fly free of charge to Washington, DC to see their memorials. Post 38 is extremely grateful to its members for their hard work and the many hours of dedication in making this year’s Brat Fry a tremendous success. We are equally humbled for the support of the Appleton community who came out in mass supporting the American Legion Post 38 family, and all the wonderful partners who made this year’s event an enormous success.

Your support of our Brat Fry was overwhelming, and we are happy to announce we not only met last year’s funds of $6500, but we exceeded it, by raising $7,500 for the Old Glory Honor Flight. We will be presenting this organization with a check during our September meeting.

JULY POST MEETING PRESENTATIONS
GUITARS FOR (4) VETS
The Appleton area is extremely fortunate to have in our community an outstanding place where veterans can learn to deal with the physical and emotional challenges of PTSD through the use of music, specifically, guitars.
Guitars 4 Vets is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to providing relief to struggling veterans through the healing power of music and community. They are a nationwide organization with community chapters, supporting veterans who are finding challenges with dealing with PTSD. The organization assist veterans in learning how to play guitar and write songs as a way of coping with the stressors of daily life.
How does the program work?
Weekly guitar lessons are provided by volunteers. Lessons are individualized and designed to help students learn at their own pace. Enrolled Veterans receive 10 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙣𝙚-𝙤𝙣-𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨, learning to play the music they like to listen to.
Once you "graduate" or finish your lessons, you receive your own guitar and gear kit (all the equipment you need to keep the riffs rolling), all of this is provided by the organization 𝑭𝑹𝑬𝑬 𝑶𝑭 𝑪𝑯𝑨𝑹𝑮𝑬 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒏.
Monthly group sessions are organized at each chapter to provide Veterans a communal atmosphere to talk and continue to play music with peers who have shared similar experiences. In G4V group sessions, the connection created between individuals who are both warriors AND guitar players serves as a catalyst for positive human interaction.
Veterans who regularly attend group sessions build confidence to further pursue creative self-expression and engagement within their communities.
Some G4V graduates and group session attendees even go on to perform at local fundraisers and teach guitar lessons in their local G4V chapter.

FLAG DAY RETIREMENT CEREMONY
Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremony
June 14, 2024
On Friday, June 14, 2024, the Appleton American Legion Post 38 hosted a Flag Day retirement ceremony onboard the Post grounds.
Like many American Legion Posts around the nation, Flag Day retirement ceremonies are called Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies. The ceremony itself is usually held in the evening and they maintain a reverent decorum. The flag(s) is properly folded before they are burned.
The ceremony also includes, presentation of the colors, Pledge of Allegiance, and the singing of the National Anthem.

MEMORIAL DAY EVENT
SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2024
The Appleton American Legion Post 38 would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to the men and women of the Scarlet Guard Color Guard who provided an exceptional showing of honor and respect to the veterans who are no longer with us. In recognition of the Memorial Day holiday, a moment of remembrance was recognized at two cemeteri9es in the City of Appleton on Sunday, May 26, 2024.
Members of the Scarlet Guard Color Guard [American Legion] Color Guard, the Appleton American Legion Post 38, and the Appleton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2778 assembled to perform the somber salutes at: Moses Montefiore Cemetery and at St. Mary Cemetery.
Both ceremonies included the traditional placing of memorial wreaths, with a recital of a short prayer or tribute, a rifle volley, and the playing of Taps. The Scarlet Guard Color Guard Color Guard was so honored to have so many in attendance; and the Appleton American Legion Post 38 would like to thank all who came out to support this time-honored event of paying respect to veterans who made sacrifices on behalf of this great nation.

The Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 held its annual oratorical on Wednesday, January 3. Miss Jade Wood is this year's winner! She is a student at Appleton North High School. Our runner up is JJ VanderLoop from Xavier. Congratulations Jade and good luck at the next level of competition.

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, the Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 hosted our annual Breakfast with Santa. This year's turnout was amazing and we want to thank all of those who came out to make this day as special for the staff as it did for the children present.
Furthermore, major kudos to all the Legion Family members who helped in making yesterday's event a huge success.
NOVEMBER 2023
APPLETON CHRISTMAS PARADE
On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the whole American Legion Family (Post 38, Unit 38 Auxiliary, Legion Riders, Scarlet Guard) gathered together and marched in the annual Appleton Christmas Parade.
This tradition has been a long-standing one and Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 and the whole Legion family presented a unified front, with our very own Scarlet Guard Color Guard guiding us along the way. (The only thing missing was someone with a glowing red nose

While the weather was chilly, our hearts were filled with warmth and gratitude for all those who attended the event and those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your commit is extremely admirable.
CHEVRON TO PURPLE HEART EVENT
The family of George C. Arts received his medal during a ceremony Saturday, November 11, 2023, as part of the Fox Valley Veterans Council’s Veterans Day tribute. The event held at the Outagamie County Court House, was themed "Chevron to Heart” focusing on the meaning of the Wounded Chevron and the Purple Heart.
The special Veterans Day presentation of the Purple Heart was made to the family of Arts who served in WWI, in the Red Arrow, 32nd Division. Arts was severely wounded in combat; he came home to make a life but eventually succumbed to his injuries and died at the young age of 35. At the time of his death, Arts never received his Purple Heart.
Through the efforts of the Fox Valley Veterans Council and Rep. Mike Gallagher’s office, the family was presented with Arts Purple Heart medal at the ceremony.
VETERANS DAY AT THE POST
Veterans and their families were treated to free chili provided by the Unit 38 Auxiliary and free beer was provided by Post 38.
We had a great turnout from the American Legion Family and all in attendance had an enjoyable time. A heartfelt "Thank You" to all that participated in the event and to Unit 38 members who served a delicious meal for all.
VETERANS DAY PRESENTATION AT VPI
On Wednesday, November 9, 2023, Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 Commander (Ed Domek), Chaplain (Bob Johnson), and Vice Commander (Jan Hoffman) with assistance from Pedro Moreno, of Valley Packaging Incorporated (VPI), gave a "Veterans Presentation" with a background on their personal military history.
Mr. Domek spoke about being drafted and his service in Vietnam; Mr. Johnson spoke about his service and life onboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal CV-59, showing his sea bag, uniform and red jersey worn on the flight deck. Mr. Hoffman spoke about being Airborne qualified and showed a video of the 82nd Airborne jumping.
Thank you, gentlemen, for representing your respective services and for representing Post 38.
2023 CONTINUED SERVICE AWARDS
On Monday, November 6, 2023, Appleton American Legion Post No. 38, had the privilege of recognizing some of our members by presenting them with their Continued Service Awards.
This award recognizes those members who have continually served in our Post 38, and in the American Legion.

On Monday, November 6, 2023, our own Adjutant Dave Baumann received his 10-year Service award as a member of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL).
For those unfamiliar with this aspect of the American Legion Family, the Sons of the American Legion are males whose parents are grandparents served in the US military and were eligible for American Legion membership.

RED HAT SOCIETY MEETING

Have you ever heard of the Red Hat Society? They are a group of women who put a positive spin on life. Recently, this group of fun-loving ladies held their meeting at the Appleton American Legion Post No. 38, on Saturday, November 4th. The Legion's own Frank Billings addressed the group.
Per their website, the "Red Hat Society...stress the importance of friendship and sisterhood, and the value of recess (play) into our busy lives. Today, hatters are commonly seen frolicking and embracing life to the fullest wearing the now famous symbol – a red or pink hat and purple and lavender regalia."

OLD GLORY HONOR FLIGH BRAT FRY
Thank you to all who came out on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, and supported our fundraiser for the Old Glory Honor Flight, Appleton.
Your generosity helped us surpass last year’s amount by over $500, for a total of $6,516!!! What an accomplishment and it could not have happened without all our faithful patrons and businesses who supported this fundraising event.
Additionally, we also want to thank all of those who spent countless hours putting this fundraising event together, those who dedicated their time and talents in ensuring this went off without a hitch and most of all those wonderful cooks who provided all with deliciously prepared food. Outstanding job!!
The funds raised will be presented at an official meeting in the weeks to come.

SCARLET GUARD COLOR GUARD

On Monday, May 29, 2023, our very own Scarlet Guard Color Guard made the ABC nightly news during its "America Strong" segment. They were highlighted for their participation in Memorial Day events across the nation.
The Scarlet Guard Color Guard was highlighted for their participation in the Appleton Cemetary Veteran Salute Tour honoring our fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen at Cemetaries across the Appleton area.
There is no greater honor than to recognize those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedoms and our Scarlet Guard continually rises to the occasion paying tribute and honoring our fallen loved ones.
Our sincerest thanks and appreciation to those who serve in our Scarlet Guard Color Guard, headed by Eric Stadler.

AWARD OF APPRECIATION - MIGEAL BABINO
Congratulations are in order to Migeal Babino, who recently received this Award of Appreciation for spearheading the long and tedious job of Club 38's kitchen remodeling job.
As a result of his unfailing efforts, coordination with several area contractors, and steadfast commitment to Post 38, his efforts resulted in a facility that will long be able to serve our most valuable assets - our customers!
Migeal is Third Vice for 9th District and is also Vice Commander.
Again, congratulations Migeal on a job well done!

Thank you to everyone who showed up on Saturday, April 8, 2023, for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and our annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Our event could not have been this successful without all the wonderful people who showed up and participated.
A heartfelt “thank you” is also in store for our staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Without their assistance, Post 38 would not be able to host such events.
INSPIRATIONAL PALM SUNDAY CONCERT
April 2, 2023
On Sunday, April 2, 2023, Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 hosted Crossroads Productions Inspirational Concert, along with a delicious Broasted Chicken buffet. This event was a huge success and all those in attendance were surely uplifted by music and song. Here are some highlights from that event.

ORATORICAL WINNER - STATE LEVEL
Our very own winner whom Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 sponsored, Mya Koffie is the winner of Wisconsin Oratorical Contest. She represented the 9th District and participated in the State Oratorical Contest held on February 11, 2023 at Ripon College.
Mya will continue her journey and will represent Wisconsin at the National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis April 21-23, 2023.
Congratulations to Ms. Koffie on her outstanding accomplishments and we wish her the very best at Nationals.

On Monday, February 6, 2023, Appleton American Legion Post 38 held its Four Chaplains Ceremony in remembrance of four Army chaplains who acted in the spirit of heroic sacrifice and humanitarianism onboard the U.S.A.T Dorchester as she sank to her watery grave.
The four Chaplains were onboard the ship were; Reverend George L. Fox of the Methodist faith, Jewish Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington of the Catholic faith, and Reverend Clark V. Poling from the Dutch Reformed Church. Witnesses to their heroic acts remember their unfailing courage, comforting support, and prayers for the many distressed individuals onboard. As the ship was sinking, these men of faith offered their own life jackets so others could be saved. They epitomized their oath of service to both God and country.
Post 38 had the honor of hosting Wisconsin Department Commander Julie Muhle, 9th District Commander, Debbie Thomas, and Wisconsin Auxiliary President Linda Coppock to witness and to support our Post in honoring such gallant bravery.
Also, in attendance and providing ceremonial support was our own, Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard, with Eric Stadler as the chairperson.
